I have followed the Sahel for ten years, from Ferdi’s 2016 plea for linking security and development to recent work in Chad, Mali and Niger. My focus has moved from the balance between military spending and aid towards natural ressources and land: who gets access to it, who governs it, and how these arrangements shape both conflict and resilience. That question runs through my work on Sudanese refugee women in eastern Chad, on communes supported by the JASS programme in Mali and Niger, and on Chad’s access to climate finance.
